Ghostlight, a publisher that focuses on JRPG localization(like Persona 3 Portable and Fate/EXTRA for PSP), announced over a week ago that they plan to bring JRPGs to PC. Apparently the reaction was so good that they are thinking about making physical collector’s editions as well. This is great news, if you ever tried to find JRPGs for PC you probably didn’t find much because they are almost nonexistent.
JRPGs are my favourite kind of RPGs because I think they have better stories, which makes me think that when you are looking for an RPG you usually look for a JRPG or a western RPG(there is probably a better term) and not whatever comes to you. Usually the things that make a western RPG good are the same things people try to avoid when they look for a JRPG, the most important being character customization.
Wait a second, how can character customization be bad in any way? It gives you more options, it allows you to play a character that you can identify yourself with better doesn’t it? Yes and no, the problem with a western RPG is that because your character can be anyone, the story is never going to adapt to that character as well as it does in most JRPGs. This is the major reason I love Final Fantasy games but I really dislike Fallout despite all the praise people give it. The game can’t tell me as much as I want to know about my character because it doesn’t know exactly who my character is.
OUYA seems to be the newest thing on kickstarter, a low price home console that wants to bring Android games to your tv. I’m not very good with the technical stuff but if you want to check the specs and other details go to their kickstarter page.
I’m not going to put my money on this for the simple reason that I’m kinda broke but I really like the idea of having a console that focuses more on indie games and makes it easier for small developers to put their games out there. That’s pretty much all I have to say at this point, I just hope the press is wrong because nobody is saying good things about this console on major gaming sites, I hope they are all wrong.
With that said, the hype is certainly exaggerated like it always is, and when given the chance to ask what games people wanted on the OUYA, they asked for the most mainstream titles they could think of. These are some of the top 20 asked games: Call of Duty, Assassin’s Creed, League of Legends, Grand Theft Auto, Final Fantasy, Mass Effect and Skyrim.
While I think games like Grand Theft Auto and Final Fantasy are more realistic choices than Assassin’s Creed and Call of Duty and that OUYA should try to get major developers involved, I also think most people missed the point of this console. At least some indie games made it to that list like Super Meat Boy, Fez and Bastion.
Because I’m disappointed with the “community” for their poor choice of games, here I present to you the top games I would like to see on OUYA(in no particular order):
- Awesomenauts: League of Legends was on the top 20 list, what people really meant with that is that they want Awesomenauts, this is 2D league of legends and it looks amazing;
- Bastion: I’m not sure if you can tone the narration down(it is a little bit excessive) but it is still a great game. I especially like how this is an ARPG without all the useless loot;
- Skull Girls: THE indie fighting game I’ve been waiting to see this on PC and would be very happy to have it on the OUYA;
- Shank 1&2 : these games are simply amazing;
- Jamestown : there aren’t that many bullet hell games out there, at least not as good as this one, everything in it brings back the old console feeling, GET THIS ONE!
I may have missed one or two that I really wanted to put in that list but my memory isn’t the best. Anyway, I just hope this OUYA console the best, I like that at least someone is putting the idea out there.
